Here I have two Limited Edition Lithographs Le Domaine Enchante (I&V), by Rene Magritte. These were printed on Rives Paper, by Fernaud Mourlot in 1956 after paintings for the knokke-le-zoute casino, signed in plate by F Mourlot. The last original of this series sold for over fifty million dollars.
|
In early 1953, Magritte was sought for a series of murals at the Casino of Knokke-Heist, and invited to submit sketches in gouache. In May, he delivers eight models in the form of oils on canvas, and on 4 July a team of painters, supervised from time to time by Magritte, finished transferring it to the walls of the casino. The set is divided into eight sections by pilasters, is a panoramic mural of some seventy meters long and four meters high, on the upper part of the walls of a room with rounded corners called the Chandelier Room (due spectacular crystal chandelier from Venice who was there at the time), adjacent to the game room The room is used for receptions or to accommodate the overflow of players when there are crowds. The mural, six times larger than the models of Magritte, was executed by a team of five artists under the direction of Raymond Art. As the owner of the casino, Nellens, wanted everything to be finished in a few weeks, it was necessary to adopt two methods to save time. The first is to paint directly on the cement walls instead of straining the fabric beforehand. It was not the thing to do in a building so close to the sea, and the wet and salty air produces predictable damage. The second is to show slides of models on the wall, instead of postponing and expand along the contours by squaring. Magritte, who arrived in Knokke-Heist while the compositions are already drawn on the walls, prepare the blue sky by making himself mixtures. For the rest, the painters commercial use colors. And contrary to what we want to believe, Magritte did not set foot on the scaffold. Gustave Nellens offers a reception to inaugurate the mural. It is recognized in the audience Maurice Chevalier, Yves Montand and Juliette Greco. Magritte is back at the entrance (we do not want more of him at the banquet given to Max Ernst retrospective organized at the Casino). He quarreled with Nellens for petty money matters. It is unclear if the requirements of Magritte wore on travel costs or compensation for Colinet brochure. Anyway, he exaggerated a bit because Nellens had offered him a sum far greater than what he could earn by devoting the same number of hours to paint pictures for Iolaus. Asked about the refusal to allow Magritte, Nellens replied: "I do not invite my suppliers."

I recently framed a Limited Edition cymbal signed by Rush drummer Neil Peart. This 22" cymbal posed a bit of a problem because of its weight and depth. I ended up building a 5" box and bolting it from the back with authentic brass wing nuts. Here is a photograph of it in situe.
It is normally sporting memrobilia items that cause head scratching moments, but I am glad to say my clients are more than happy wiith it. |

I now have a range of work by Belfast artist and sculptor William Robinson, William often works with reclaimed copper, welding and working the metal into interesting shapes, evoking a time gone by, haunting lonely figures and boats from Ireland's mystical past. The vessel here depicts the Sack of Baltimore off the West Coast of Cork in 1631, when Barbary pirates attacked the village. Other cast sculptures include bulls and angels.
Although I have only had these a few weeks I have already sold several pieces. William Robinson's work is well worth watching as an investment for the future. I currently have two pieces representing figures from the mythical island of Hi-Brazil off the Irish Atlantic coast which was said to be cloaked in mist, except for one day each seven years, when it became visible but still could not be reached. |
